I'll be the first to admit, I am surprised I am writing this post as part of my introduction to my new brokerage, Compass.
Previously, my business has been an island.
Yes, I had support from my brokerage.
Yes, I learned from my local board and ongoing training.
Yes, I connected with other agents, especially learning during transactions.
But ultimately, thats where things stopped. There was no workplace culture outside of my one-on-one relationships with my clients.
And that was completely fine. I was 100% happy with that.
But then I started at Compass and it became clear VERY quickly that there was a culture at Compass, both nationally and locally. One that valued integrity, high levels of professionalism, creativity and progress, and collaboration.
And a month in, I'm surprised that my island-loving-self is very into it.

Here are Compass's Principals:
For a quick run down of what these mean, you can visit Robert Reffkin (our founder and CEO)'s Master Class page or watch his great talk
While these seem like internal things that might not be meaningful to you, a client or customer in the real estate industry, here are the reasons why they are impactful.
1) If your agent, or other agents around them, is "Obsessing About Opportunity" and "Maximizing their Strengths" then you have an elevated professional in the making
2) Since Compass is one of the largest brokerages in the country and continues to grow, if large numbers of agents are held to this standard, it doesn't' just improve your individual experience, it elevates the industry as a whole; it forces the industry to excel
3) If your agent is "Collaborating without Ego" then they will get better, without fail. Compass agents want to better their businesses, yes, but ultimately there is a background understanding that there is actually enough business for everyone. If we can be in a collaborative environment, then we will all get better and so will the industry.
4) There is a creative, dreamer-approved, eagerness in Compass. It allows for failures so it is an open culture around opportunity, creativity, and passion. For me, that means that I don't HAVE to run after commission numbers as my motivation. My motivation can be what I offer my clients, their experience, how I set myself apart, and pursuing the things that make me passionate about what I do.
5) With all of this, there is also a HUGE determination in the company to invest in their agents. Unlike any brokerage I've known so far, they are agent-business driven. They aren't, externally, dollars driven. They invest in their agents and the agent experience knowing that will eventually lead to commission dollars. That investment is massive. Not only do we have a powerful technology team and marketing team behind all of Compass, locally and nationally, that strengthens our business tools, but Compass invests in trainings, coaching, one-on-one experience managers and real estate guru office managers to continually invest in agents' businesses and experiences.
Elevated agents and their experiences will elevate the industry and the client experience.
I hope my clients experience it too!
